SOUTH AFRICAN PHENOMENA, MAY 12, 1909 LDT 99

In the Natal Witness of May 12, 1909, we read of a singular sight in the Transvaal section of Africa, in the vicinity of Durban: “Towards evening a concave cloud of a very singular appearance, shaped like a Tam O’Shanter, and of a dull yellow color, hung over the Devil’s Peak, and the lightnings once more began to play. The sunset effects were extraordinary brilliant, the colors ranging from deep gold to pink and crimson. Another remarkable feature of the evening was the appearance, apparently over the Cape flats, of a perpendicular pillar with bright rainbow hues, which gradually faded as darkness fell.” LDT 99.4
