3. Look for principles: HPEGWW 16

The previous consideration leads us to a third rule for study. We are to look for principles when we read. There are numerous illustrations of this. In her dress counsels, for example, Ellen White gives principles. These include modesty, good taste, simplicity, economy, and appropriateness to the age. Ellen White suggests that we are to look for principles as we study the Bible and what she wrote: HPEGWW 16.1

The Word of God abounds in general principles for the formation of correct habits of living, and the testimonies, general and personal, have been calculated to call….attention more especially to these principles.—Testimonies for the Church 5:663-664.
