In 1897, while Mrs. White was in Australia, Dr. David Paulson, then working at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, drew together from Mrs. White's writings on health topics then available to him a large number of excerpts and paragraphs, assembling them in topical order. This collection, called Healthful Living, appeared eight years before the publication of The Ministry of Healing. The volume, 284 pages in length, became a valuable teaching aid, and at least three editions were printed. However, with the appearance of The Ministry of Healing in 1905, The Paulson Compilation was no longer published. Mrs. White was appreciative of this compiled volume, but of course it did not have the continuity which characterized her books. MM ix.1
