    Be Calm or Silent

“Those who are proclaiming God’s message to the world must not captious or overbearing. They should not be too free to criticize or condemn others....COOD 53.5

Give the reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. With fear lest you have not the truth?-No; but with fear lest by some unwise, impatient word, you may close hearts against the truth. If you can not be calm in answering the accusation of enemies, it is better to keep silent.”-Gospel Workers (1892), 396, 397.COOD 54.1

It is true that our Saviour said, “Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.” Luke 17:3, 4. Mind, our Saviour does not say take heed to your brother that you shall rebuke him; but the great caution is, “Take heed to yourselves.” The apostle Paul states it in this way: “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:1, 2.COOD 54.2

In addressing the Romans the apostle said: “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification.” Romans 15:1, 2.COOD 54.3

As encouragement to this mode of dealing with the erring the apostle James wrote: “Brethren, if any of you do err form the truth, and one convert him; let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” James 5:19, 20.COOD 54.4
