    THE DARK AGES

The Dark Ages began when the Roman Church received power. The spiritual darkness became deeper as the power of the church increased. Gradually people gave up their faith in Christ and put their faith in the pope of Rome. People had trusted in Christ to forgive their sins. Now these people looked to the pope. They looked to the priests and ministers to whom the pope had given authority. The people were taught that they could come to God only through the pope. In fact, they were taught that pope stood in the place of God to them. The pope must be perfectly obeyed. The smallest breaking of the pope's rules brought punishment on the bodies and souls of the people who disobeyed.SRme 1.1484

The minds of the people were turned away from God to sinful, cruel men. In fact, the people's minds were turned to Satan, who is the prince of darkness. Satan was working through leaders of the church. Sin was covered by acts and rules that appeared to be holy. When people are kept from studying the Bible, and when people regard themselves as perfect, deception and sin grow and prosper. There is corruption when man's laws and customs are honored more than the law of God.SRme 1.1485
