Conclusion

Between 1849 and 1858 Ellen White made at least 10 major observations concerning the origin, rise, growth, development, and direction of modern spiritualism:GVEGW 59.5

1. The “Rochester rappings” of Hydesville, New York, which launched modern spiritualism in 1848, were “the direct work of evil spirits.”GVEGW 59.6

2. They would spread widely and rapidly.GVEGW 59.7

3. Though initially a secular phenomenon, they would soon metamorphose into a religious movement.GVEGW 59.8

4. The movement would link up with hypnosis, both coming from a common source.GVEGW 60.1

5. No criticism would be brooked by the new religion.GVEGW 60.2

6. There would be a marked, continuing increase in satanic miracles.GVEGW 60.3

7. The miracles of Jesus would be dismissed as merely spiritualistic operations.GVEGW 60.4

8. These miracles would become a major factor in the end-time scenario.GVEGW 60.5

9. Evil angels would impersonate the writers of the Bible, ostensibly now returning from the spirit world to correct alleged “errors” in their writings, on the basis of additional new information gained on “the other side.”GVEGW 60.6

10. The “crowning act” of the great controversy end-time drama will be Satan’s attempt to impersonate Christ in a counterfeit second coming.GVEGW 60.7

Ellen White sounds this solemn warning to all who live in the end-time:GVEGW 60.8

“Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive. By the Bible testimony these will detect the deceiver in his disguise. To all the testing time will come....GVEGW 60.9

“Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief.” ^{56The Great Controversy, 625, 626.}GVEGW 60.10
